Love it when the dads come through with a review 🤩

I find it infuriating. 😤 Across the board, but

I find it infuriating. 😤 Across the board, but especially during world breastfeeding week and ESPECIALLY when it comes from people who are supposedly on this platform to reach more people to help.

While I understand that they, too, need to make a living, what gets me is the lack of integrity in doing so. It’s the false claims that play into new parents’ insecurities, in to their fears and sometimes even into their desperation. No research behind it, no proof. And no, focus groups don’t qualify as scientific research.

Supplements don’t boost your milk supply. (It’s a LOT more complicated than that and there definitely isn’t a one-size-fits-all.)

Wearable pumps have the potential to decrease your overall supply over time.

There is no one magical product that will solve your problem/ prevent what you fear/ make everything easier. Likely, what you need is support. And quality information that is tailored to your specific circumstances.

Here, locally, you can find that at the hospitals who all have IBCLCs on staff, or reach out to these lovely ladies providing lactation support @milkandmatrescence @babymoon.doula or myself.

Truly, don’t let companies and influencers prey on you. Marketing is a powerful tool, and there are many making a whole lot of money off us. Don’t fall for it this week, as everyone steps up their affiliate-game. You got this.

Partners have a tendency to want to “fix”. But— there’s no fixing labor.

Let’s help them channel that energy into something supportive, to keep it from becoming nervous energy.

1. A sip of water after every contraction keeps you hydrated. If you use a water bottle with a straw, the act of sipping from the straw also helps relax tour pelvic floor as the two are connected. Nice bonus, right?

2. When your partner focuses on taking deep breaths themselves, they are calmer. It’s encouraging during labor to see our partners be calm, as it reinforces in us that everything is as it should be.

3. Positive reinforcement. “You’re so strong; you’ve got this.” “This baby is so lucky to have you as its mother/parent.” “I love you so much.” “I’m so in awe of you.” Let’s just say it: we all want to hear these things, but especially when we are moving through some of the hardest and most profound work we will ever do.

These are all great jobs to have your partner focus on. If they tend not to know what to do with themselves, or if they ‘need a job’, these are it!

Bonus tip: have them set the mood. Dim lights, soft music in the background, have some candles (no open flames in the hospital!!) or twinkle lights going… the oxytocin we have during labor is the same oxytocin that is involved in seggsy time, if you catch my drift.
